CHOOSE ONE

Why Cholula exploding from a Heinz Ketchup bottle? I juxtaposed two condiments that I use arguably everyday to explore my confusion with choosing one race to define myself as a biracial individual. In a culture, where you are either labeled as one or the other, I find it difficult to navigate my way in terms of identity. And by replacing the Cholula labels with aggressive phrases in Spanish and English, the audience can feel the demands of the labels for me to pick one nationality that I identify as. This reflects the manufactured way in which the culture forces one to form identities.

In terms of craft, I learned how clay can bend and fold to create dynamic shapes and movement, especially the explosive quality that I captured.
