ACCEPTANCE

In Japan, with a form of craft called Kintsugi, artists take the broken pieces of porcelain plates and or cups, and glue them back together with gold. I liked the idea that broken pieces can be put back together, just as in my life, I am striving for healing and to see how the broken parts of my life are a part of who I am–parts of the whole. As a self portrait, wood was the perfect medium to create a softer expression of myself–firm, yet can be damaged. The movement, the bends and dents, of the wood exemplify the ever-changing, fluid pattern of life. The darker lines, the burn marks, are cracks or failures in my life. The line work emulates the movement of the wood, showing how they are complementary–one cannot exist without the other.
